Gum Disease Treatment in the East Village, NYC

What is Peridontitis?

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is an infection of the tissues that support the teeth.

Periodontal disease attacks just below the gum line in the sulcus (a very shallow V-shaped crevice between the tooth and gums) where it causes the attachment of the tooth and its supporting tissues to break down. As the tissues are damaged, the sulcus develops into a pocket and generally speaking, the more severe the disease, the greater the depth of the pocket. The dental experts at East Village Dental Arts are highly trained in diagnosing and treating peridontitis. What is the Difference Between Peridontitis and Gingivitis?

Gum diseases are classified according to the severity of the disease. The two major stages are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a milder and reversible form of periodontal disease that only affects the gums. Gingivitis may lead to more serious, destructive forms of periodontal disease called periodontitis.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease is caused by a number of factors, with poor oral hygiene being the most common cause. Poor oral hygiene creates plaque buildup which in turn irritates your gums causing redness, bleeding, and soreness. More common risk factors for gum disease are:

  • Smoking or tobacco products
  • Crooked, overlapping teeth
  • Hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy and menopause
  • Poor nutrition
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Stress

What are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?

Gum disease symptoms are not always seen and you may be unaware you have it, which is why regular dental checkups are so important.

In the early stages of the disease, symptoms include red and swollen gums, along with bleeding after brushing or flossing. This stage is commonly known as gingivitis. As the disease advances and gingivitis is left untreated, the disease then becomes periodontitis. Symptoms of periodontitis include:

  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth or loss of teeth
  • Receding gums
  • Gum abscesses (pus that develops under your gums or/and teeth)
  • An unpleasant taste in your mouth

How Does East Village Dental Arts Treat Peridontitis?

The best way to treat and prevent gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene and making sure to have regular professional dental cleanings. Dental treatments include:

Scale and polish: This is the removal of plaque and tartar that builds up on your teeth using special instruments.

Root Planing: Root planing may be required to deep clean under your gums to get rid of bacteria that lives on the roots of your teeth.

Antibiotics: Antibiotics may be recommended to kill off bad bacteria that may be living in your gums.

Surgery: When scaling and root planing isn’t enough to treat periodontitis, surgery may be recommended.

Changes to your lifestyle can also help treat and prevent gum disease. Brushing twice a day, regularly using mouthwash and stopping smoking can greatly improve your oral hygiene.
