Problems That Can Arise When Teeth Are Removed
When a patient is missing teeth and they are not replaced it can cause a number of problems. Initially, the underlying tooth loss will create a large space that will cause neighboring teeth to fill in the gap. This can cause teeth to become out of balance. When this process happens teeth begin to extrude out of their sockets and it is possible that you can create spaces. This can lead to periodontal disease.
A dental implant is a very successful way of improving a patient’s overall smile. By replacing missing teeth with a dental implant, patients can retain their smiles and achieve optimal dental health.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are permanent prosthetic teeth that are attached to a titanium post that is inserted into the patient’s jawbone. The titanium post will act as a root for the tooth and on top of the abutment will be placed a prosthetic crown that will exactly resemble a patient’s tooth. The crown will be composed of either ceramic or porcelain and can be color-matched to your teeth. When you smile, the fact that you have an implant will be hardly visible.
Millions of patients all over the world have successfully undergone dental implant surgery and have changed the way they smile, eat, and laugh forever.

What Are The Benefits of Dental Implants?
It is important to know that when a tooth is removed, the bone density across the jaw ridge decreases in the first year and the patient will lose 25% in the area where the tooth is removed. Loss of bone density in patients who are having one or multiple teeth removed is a serious issue and therefore bone loss can cause loss of definition in facial structure. It can cause patients to lose the ability to speak, chew, and maintain nourishment from their food will become compromised. In the area where tooth loss has happened, missing teeth should be replaced not only for cosmetic reasons but also for the patient’s oral health and total well being.
In some cases, dental implants are placed immediately after the removal of a tooth, but normally some time will be left before an implant will be placed after the removal of a tooth.
Benefits of dental implants can include:
- Improved appearance of your smile and self-esteem.
- Comfort and improved conversation, well being, and overall dental health.
- The closest thing to real teeth.
- Preventing bone loss in the jawbone.
- Brightened smile by replacing missing teeth and gaps.
- Better than traditional bridges that can grind down the teeth over time and damage your gums.
- Enhanced quality of life and improved eating habits
- No messy adhesives used to hold dentures.
- Eliminates unsightly metal clasps seeing on dental partials for partial dentures.
- With the proper care and attention, the implants will never need to be removed.
What to Expect During Dental Implant Surgery
Dental implant surgery is performed by either an oral surgeon or a periodontist. You will have an initial consultation with one of our doctors who will evaluate how much bone density you have and whether you will need bone grafting before dental implants or if there is sufficient bone mass to perform the procedure. Once it has determined that you are a possible candidate, we can schedule you for your dental implant procedure.
Initially, our dentist will surgically place a dental implant composed of a titanium post into the patient’s jawbone. This is performed by removing some of the gum tissue and exposing the bone. Sophisticated dental software is used in order to strategically place the dental implant in the space. The exposed area is then covered once the implant is placed and the process of osseo-integration takes place.
We will then schedule a follow-up appointment in 3 to 6 months after the implant has become fused with the patient’s jaw. This process is known as osseo-integration and takes place over a number of months whereby the titanium post will become fixed to the jawbone. When the patient returns to see if the process of osseo-integration has been successful, the dentist will remove some of the gum tissue in order to see if the titanium post has fused with the jaw bone. In most cases, this will have been enough time for the patient’s titanium post to fuse to the bone. In many cases, the crown can then be affixed to the titanium post known as the abutment.
How To Clean Dental Implants
